Kyocera Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Kyocera Corporation, recently announced an investment in KatoMed, which was the IGE MedTech Accelerator Company of the Year in 2025. KatoMed, who has developed a navigation tool for spine surgery that could result in safer, less costly procedures and improved workflow for surgeons, has deep ties to the University of California San Diego. Those connections were on display recently, as the current and incoming presidents of Japanese electronics giant Kyocera attended a demo of KatoMed’s technology on campus, at the UC San Diego Center for the Future of Surgery. An implant that strengthens bones affected by osteoporosis. A cream that could ultimately help treat autoimmune diseases. A device for home dialysis that requires no water. These technologies are being developed by Japanese startups interested in bringing these innovations to the United States market, but not sure where exactly to start.
September 29, 2022-- The University of California San Diego campus community turned out in big numbers last Friday to celebrate the opening of the sleek and soaring Franklin Antonio Hall. The 186,000 square foot building is not only innovative in its architecture, it’s also ground-breaking in how research teams are organized within the building. It is home to 13 collaboratories–research laboratories bringing together researchers from different departments to solve a wide range of problems facing society.
The $250,000 seed investment in LIMBER Prosthetics and Orthotics Inc. – a San Diego medical device startup spun out of UC San Diego by two former students – represents a strategic expansion of UC San Diego’s robust innovation ecosystem. It is the first time a campus in the University of California system has ever invested directly in one of its own spinoffs.
Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), in partnership with UC San Diego’s Institute for the Global Entrepreneur (IGE), will host a JAPAN Innovation Luncheon on June 4th, the second day of BIO2024.
This event gathers professionals from the biotech and life sciences industry and startups from Japan and the U.S. It features presentations, informational booths, and networking opportunities to promote, build, and strengthen a collaborative ecosystem between Japan and the U.S.
