Kyocera Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Kyocera Corporation, recently announced an investment in KatoMed, which was the IGE MedTech Accelerator Company of the Year in 2025. KatoMed, who has developed a navigation tool for spine surgery that could result in safer, less costly procedures and improved workflow for surgeons, has deep ties to the University of California San Diego. Those connections were on display recently, as the current and incoming presidents of Japanese electronics giant Kyocera attended a demo of KatoMed’s technology on campus, at the UC San Diego Center for the Future of Surgery. From algal farming microbusinesses to synthetic-free pharmaceuticals, student innovators at the University of California San Diego’s 8th Annual Triton Innovation Challenge cast a wide net on solutions to global problems.
San Diego, Calif., November 21, 2019 -- To kick off its 2020 expansion, the UC San Diego Institute for the Global Entrepreneur (IGE) hosted its inaugural showcase on November 1, with over 20 technology teams and startups exhibiting from across campus and the surrounding San Diego ecosystem.
During the program, IGE announced it’s launching a new MedTech Accelerator, as well as the Shah Family Entrepreneur Fellowship, and a new IGE Founders Fund, seeded with an initial $1 million philanthropic gift from the Legler Benbough Foundation.
